{taco pizza}

What happens when a taco meets a pizza?  Let’s taco-bout it……

That was so bad, sorry…HA!

Raise your hand if you love tacos?

Raise your hand if you love pizza?

It’s safe to say, I see all your hands in the air.

I think we all know by now, that pizza is my jam.  Tacos are a very close runner-up though.  So, why not combine the two for Taco Tuesday?

Years and years ago, I made a taco pizza.  I totally forgot about it, till last week.  I decided to re-create it.  Give it a shot.  See what my peeps think.

Well, it was a hit!  I got thumbs up!

Kinda like a Mexican Pizza, but kinda not.  You know what I mean?

Let’s take a moment and marvel at that pizza.  That crust.  Those toppings.  Bubbly cheese.

Tell me that doesn’t make your mouth water…..

then we can’t be friends!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1/2 pound ground turkey
  • 1 cup white onion, chopped
  • taco seasoning (1/2 packet)
  • 15 oz can pinto beans
  • 2 teaspoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • store-bought pizza dough/crust (TJ’s is my fave)
  • flour for dusting
  • cornmeal for dusting
  • 2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups iceberg lettuce, shredded
  • 1 cup cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 1 can sliced olives
  • pepperoncinis, thinly sliced
  • cilantro, chopped
  • tapatio or your hot sauce of choice

.

Here’s what you’ll do:

Set oven to 450 degrees.  Place pizza stone on the lowest oven rack setting while oven pre-heats.  I own the Pamper Chef pizza stone and SWEAR by it.  If using a baking sheet, spray with non-stick spray and set aside till ready (no need to place in the oven while pre-heating.

While oven pre-heats, brown turkey + onion with taco seasoning.  Drain and set aside.

In a small pot over medium heat, add drained pinto beans + chili powder + cumin.  Slightly mash beans.

On a working surface dusted with flour, stretch + roll out pizza dough to a 12 inch round.  You cane made it square too, if using a baking sheet.  If using a pre-formed pizza crust, skip this step 🙂

Once oven is pre-heated, remove the pizza stone + dust with cornmeal.

Transfer pizza dough to prepared stone or baking sheet.

Spread beans over the top leaving about a 1/2 inch border.

Top with 1 cup of mozzarella cheese followed by taco meat then remaining mozzarella cheese.

Bake pizza for 15-20 minutes, until bottom is crisp + cheese is melted and bubbly.

Top pizza with lettuce.

Dollop with sour cream.

Then pile on all the toppings.  Don’t skimp.  Top with cilantro to make it real pretty.  Grab the Tap-Your-Uncle and give it a couple good shakes over the top of the pizza.

Cut your pizza into 8 slices and dive in!!

Serve with a side of salsa?  Or maybe you’re a ranch dipper.  Either will do the trick.
